Africa's exceptional solar irradiation and wind resources position it as a future global hub for green hydrogen production. With production costs projected to reach $1.50/kg by 2030 — competitive with grey hydrogen from natural gas — the continent is attracting tens of billions in committed investment from energy majors, sovereign wealth funds, and development finance institutions.

Namibia: The HYPHEN Mega-Project

Namibia's $10 billion HYPHEN Hydrogen Energy project is the continent's flagship initiative. Located in the Tsau //Khaeb National Park, the project will combine 3GW of wind and solar generation with electrolysis capacity to produce up to 300,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030. The hydrogen will be converted to green ammonia for export to European and Asian markets.

The Namibian government has signed framework agreements with Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Japan for offtake, creating a guaranteed demand floor for the project's output.

"Namibia has the potential to become the Gulf State of green hydrogen — a small country with outsized global energy significance."

Kenya: Geothermal Advantage

Kenya's unique geothermal resources in the Rift Valley provide 24/7 renewable baseload power, making it exceptionally well-positioned for continuous hydrogen production. The country's green hydrogen strategy targets 1GW of electrolyser capacity by 2032, leveraging existing power purchase agreements and grid infrastructure.

South Africa: Platinum Synergies

South Africa's position as the world's dominant producer of platinum — the key catalyst in hydrogen fuel cells — creates a unique dual opportunity. The country's Hydrogen Valley initiative, stretching from Johannesburg to Durban, combines production, distribution, and end-use applications in a single integrated corridor. Anglo American's hydrogen-powered mine haul trucks are already operational at the Mogalakwena platinum mine.

Investment Landscape

The Path Forward

Green hydrogen represents perhaps the single largest new investment opportunity in Africa's energy sector. Countries that move early to establish regulatory frameworks, secure concession agreements, and develop export infrastructure will capture disproportionate value. At Africa Capital Investors, we are actively facilitating connections between global energy investors and African hydrogen project developers.
